Volunteer Policy
The purpose of this form is to outline the minimum care standards for rescue dogs as defined by our mission. It is also intended as a mechanism for liability protection of the organization as an entity, and its officers, Board of Directors and volunteers. Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc. expects that all volunteers that provide either temporary or long-term foster care will adhere to the guidelines listed below. Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc. also recognizes that all situations are different due to the fact that we are dealing with living creatures. Therefore these guidelines can be modified on an individual basis at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
I agree to abide by these guidelines set forth by Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc. with the understanding that I must appropriately handle this dog to insure the safety and welfare of the dog, as well as any animal and/or human that the rescue Belgian Tervuren comes in contact with while under my care. I will do everything possible to provide appropriate care and training to assist in reaching the goal of permanent adoption of the dog.
- To keep any dog that is in my direct care in a secure location.
- To care for this dog in the same manner that I care for my own dogs and to make reasonable attempts to include it as part of my household during its stay. I will pay attention to and care for the emotional needs of any dog entrusted to my care by Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc. I will interact one-on-one with any dog as much as possible, in order to properly assess it’s temperament and special needs for placement. To house rescue tervuren in a safe, humane, and sanitary conditions, which meet or exceed all minimum standards as defined by the local health, animal control and sanitation authorities.
- To expose the dog to a variety of circumstances and environments. To record and report the reactions of the dog so to help facilitate Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc in finding permanent placement for the dog.
- To report within a week of the dogs arrival in my home the condition, both physically and behaviorally, of the dog and update Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc. on a regular basis. Any change in the dog’s status, either medical and/or behavioral, will be reported immediately to a Board Member of Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc.
- To assure that all basic medical needs are met for the dog. This includes routine vaccinations, heartworm testing and medication/preventative, testing and elimination of parasites, treatment of any infection/virus, and treatment of skin conditions.
- Any non-essential procedures/expenses including medical, dental, equipment, and care for dog (kenneling, training classes) must get approval from Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc. to guarantee repayment of the expenditure. A cost estimate may be required for payment authorization.
- I will only euthanize a rescue Belgian Tervuren that is determined not to be adoptable due to serious health or temperament problems, AND, only with approval of a member of the Board of Directors of Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc.
- If not already spayed/neutered to have this procedure done at the expense of Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc.
- To attempt to train basic house manners i.e. housebreaking, crate training, walking on leash, sit, down and stay if the dog does not already have these skills.
